SEO for Organic Results

SEO traditionally refers to the process of trying to get your site to rank highly in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

Search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo (now powered by Bing) want to provide the most accurate useful and relevant results to users search terms. The trick to getting your site to rank well is to show the Search Engines that you are all those things and more.

No matter how much you learn about SEO (and there is a lot under the surface) you should always remember that all searches start with the simple act of a user typing in a few words into a Search Engine and hitting "Go". This is why Keyword research Is a hugely important area in my SEO strategies. Its pointless having the perfect site structure, URL structure, clean code and all the rest if you dont know what people are looking for and even keywords what you want to be found for.

When creating strategic plans for clients a holistic approach is key, the technical issues, the content, the back links and the keywords all need to be considered and optimised to get the top spots.

SEM and Paid Advertising

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is almost a catch all term for anything other than SEO which you can use to make yourself more visible and advertise to customers through search.

The most common, traceable and often preferred of these methods is Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing which is operated by the major search engines. The advantage being that you only pay for an advert if you actually get a visitor to your site, and even then you can track to see if they completed a goal you have set.
